The Value of our STARs

Qing Ling • January 1, 2023

Actions may speak louder than words, but values are the driving force behind our actions.

The Oxford Dictionary defines “values” as simply being “one’s judgement of what is important in life.”

So the question to ask ourselves as we launch into a new year with renewed hope for a better future with better actions becomes: What is important to you?

Allow me to share the story of how we settled on our core values here at Nurse Generation, as it just might help you with defining your own personal set of values.

SERVICE: Starting with the foundation of our business as being one of first serving our healthcare workers well in order to serve our healthcare clients well, it was obvious that the value of Service was a non-negotiable for us – Service for both our internal and external customers. The saying, “service with a smile” is something we live out every day, because nothing makes us happier than seeing a happy customer.

TEAM: Nursing is not what we do, it is who we are. As practitioners of person-centred care, we are the glue that skillfully binds all the parties involved in the healthcare of our patients – doctors, family, allied health, specialists, and more. As such, it makes sense that a core value for us is working as a Team.

AUTONOMY: A key factor in the life of an agency nurse is the absolute autonomy we have over our own work schedule. The freedom to choose when and where to work is a work-perk that we want to keep providing to our nurses with as much convenience as possible; such as the use of mobile apps and informative shift logistical details. In the same way, we believe in the importance of empowering our nurses to own their work. Our nurses take pride in being the best nurses they can be, with our ongoing support and development of their skills and competence.

REAL: As the support team for a highly vulnerable population of sick and elderly, there is no doubt that on top of everything else we offer, we must firstly have the ability to show up - in person and with our whole selves. As a people business, we are not just interested in having a physical presence, but being there psychologically and emotionally for our customers as well.

So, what do you think of our STAR values? Hopefully it has helped you with your values identification process as you prepare and plan for the ‘new year, new you’.

As for the fact that our values happen to spell out STAR? It’s a remarkable coincidence that we’ve happily adopted to remind ourselves that each one of our team members are rockstars in their own right, because the thing that we value most of all, are our STAR nurses.

Star-struck with you,

Qing
